A 20-year-old man has been apprehended in Kano for allegedly attempting to smuggle cannabis to inmates by hiding it inside bread.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, said its operatives at the Gwauron Dutse Correctional Facility arrested the suspect while trying to deliver the illicit substance to inmates.
According to a statement released on Thursday in Kano by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, CD Musbahu Lawan K/Nassarawa, the suspect, Muhammad Kabir from the Hotoro Tishama area, was found in possession of cannabis concealed in loaves of bread.
The statement explained that the arrest took place within the premises of the Kano State High Court as the suspect attempted to pass the drugs to inmates who had been brought to court for their ongoing trials.
It added that the Kano State Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ado Inuwa, has ordered that the suspect be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution.
