A lawmaker in Delta State has been impeached following allegations of gross misconduct by members of the local government legislative council.

The impeachment occurred during a plenary session of the Ughelli North Local Government Legislative Arm, where a majority of councillors voted to remove the embattled leader from office. The action was taken after lawmakers accused him of conduct deemed incompatible with the responsibilities of his position.

According to the councillors, the allegations against the impeached leader include mismanagement of funds, failure to convene legislative sittings regularly, abuse of office, and inability to effectively coordinate the affairs of the council. They maintained that the decision was reached in the interest of transparency, accountability, and smooth legislative operations.

Following the impeachment, the council proceeded to elect a new leader to steer the affairs of the legislative arm, pledging renewed commitment to effective representation and cooperation with the executive arm of the local government.

The development has generated reactions within the local government area, with observers describing the move as a test of internal legislative accountability at the grassroots level.

As of the time of filing this report, the impeached lawmaker had not publicly reacted to the allegations or the decision of the council.
