A pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Deacon Steve Eyo, has reportedly slumped and died while preaching about death at a funeral service in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday, October 2, 2026, throwing residents and members of the congregation into shock and mourning.
According to a report by PM News, Eyo was officiating at the funeral service and delivering a sermon titled “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond” when the unexpected tragedy occurred.
Eyewitnesses said the cleric was speaking about the inevitability of death, telling mourners that nobody could escape it, although people die at different times.
He reportedly compared life to going to the market, explaining that while some people leave early, others stay until later. In the same way, he said, some people die young while others live longer, stressing that death could come when least expected.
However, about 15 minutes into the sermon, Eyo suddenly collapsed, sending his microphone crashing to the floor.
Initially, some mourners reportedly thought the pastor was demonstrating how suddenly death could occur, given the subject of his message. They soon realised that the situation was serious.
Church ministers and choir members immediately gathered around the fallen cleric and began praying for him, while individuals with medical knowledge reportedly administered first aid.
A medical responder later indicated that the pastor had stopped breathing, prompting efforts to rush him to a nearby hospital.
In a tragic twist, Eyo was transported in the same ambulance that had been hired to convey the remains of the deceased whose funeral he had attended.
He was subsequently confirmed dead at the hospital, and his body was moved to the mortuary.
The circumstances surrounding the pastor’s sudden collapse and death were not immediately established as of the time of the report.
The incident has left members of the community and the church mourning the unexpected loss of a cleric who had gathered with others to pay his final respects to the deceased.
