The Edo State Government, under the leadership of Distinguished Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has awarded contracts for the construction of 54 road projects, covering over 500 kilometers across the State.
According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Dr. John Obanor, the initiative is regarded as one of the most ambitious infrastructure development efforts in the State's recent history. He listed the projects to include two flyover bridges, and roads, spanning multiple communities and local government areas. He stated that the projects underscored the administration's commitment to enhancing connectivity and boosting economic activity through strategic investment in road infrastructure.
Speaking on the development during a media briefing in a local radio programme, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry confirmed that the awarded projects form part of a comprehensive road rehabilitation and construction agenda. He expressed strong confidence in the Governor’s consistent delivery on public infrastructures, saying, "When the Governor says anything, he does it."
In addition to the scale of the projects, Dr. Obanor emphasized the State Government’s focus on construction quality. He disclosed that a robust materials’ testing and quality control framework has been established to ensure contractors adhere strictly to standards and do not compromise on quality of materials.
"We employ various methods to verify the authenticity of materials used by contractors. This includes conducting in-situ density tests and other standard assessments to guarantee full compliance with specifications. In-situ density testing is a widely recognized civil engineering technique that measures the compactness of road sub-base and base materials on-site, ensuring construction meets approved standards before progressing to subsequent layers,” the Permanent Secretary explained.
The Permanent Secretary maintained that the Ministry officials conduct continuous inspections of the projects and have issued clear notices to contractors regarding timely delivery. He reiterated that contractors have been made to be fully aware that project timelines are binding and that the administration expects quality and prompt completion.
Residents in communities long underserved by quality road networks have welcomed the development. Many are hopeful that the projects will be completed on schedule, significantly improving daily commuting and commercial activities in their areas.
