The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed viral reports claiming that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, ordered the outright disbandment of all police tactical units and squads across state commands.
In a clarification issued from the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the Police described the reports as a misrepresentation of the IGP’s directive, stressing that no blanket dissolution was ordered.
According to the statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the IGP instead directed a strategic restructuring and reduction of tactical teams to curb excesses and improve efficiency.
Under the new directive, zonal and state commands are to maintain a maximum of five tactical units, while area commands and divisions are limited to three. The adjustment, the Police said, may involve merging or disbanding certain teams at the discretion of command heads.
The Force explained that the move is aimed at addressing the proliferation of poorly supervised tactical squads, which has led to public complaints and strained police-community relations.
It added that the restructuring would help redeploy personnel to understaffed police divisions and posts, thereby strengthening grassroots policing and improving service delivery.
The Police also clarified that state-backed security outfits such as the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos and similar formations in other states are not affected by the directive.
Reaffirming his commitment to accountability and a people-friendly policing system, the IGP said the reforms are designed to enhance supervision, restore public trust, and eliminate operational excesses within the Force.
