Renovation and fumigation ahead of new session

The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has issued a directive mandating all undergraduate students residing in campus hostels to vacate their accommodation on or before Monday, 28 July 2025.

In an official memo signed by the Dean of Students, Professor Patrick Egaga, and released by the Public Relations Unit, the evacuation notice follows the conclusion of semester examinations on Friday, 25 July.

According to Prof. Egaga, the move is part of the university’s routine efforts to renovate and fumigate the hostels ahead of the next academic session. “This is a necessary process to maintain hygiene and safety,” the memo stated.

Students have been instructed to return all university property, including mattresses and keys, in good condition to their respective Hall Administrators. Rooms must also be left clean and orderly, with the notice warning that failure to comply could result in penalties.

The memo further urged students to ensure the removal of all personal items before departure. “The University will not be responsible for any items left behind,” it read.

However, the directive does not apply to medical students housed in designated hostels or foreign students holding valid study permits. Those exempted have been asked to liaise with the Students Affairs Division for further guidance.

The university appealed for full cooperation, stating that the temporary closure was in the collective interest of the student body. “These maintenance efforts are essential to ensure a conducive living environment for all students,” the Public Relations Unit added.
