Tragedy struck in Benin, the Edo State capital, as gunmen suspected to be armed robbers gunned down a police sergeant in broad daylight on Tuesday, 16 July 2025.
The slain officer, identified as Sergeant Aminu Yusuf, was reportedly serving as an orderly to a Chinese expatriate attached to a private company in the State. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 2:45 pm along First East Circular Road, shortly after the expatriate had made a large cash withdrawal from a bank in the metropolis.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen, numbering four, ambushed the vehicle conveying the officer and the expatriate, opening fire in what appeared to be a targeted robbery. Sources revealed that the assailants carted away an AK-47 rifle belonging to the deceased officer (breech number BD 347851), 30 rounds of ammunition, and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to run into millions of naira.
“The officer was attacked while escorting the expatriate from the bank. The robbers struck swiftly and escaped with the weapon and money,” a source who preferred anonymity said.
Sergeant Yusuf was rushed to a nearby specialist hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
As at the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement. Efforts to reach the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, were unsuccessful.
However, security sources within the Command disclosed that a full-scale manhunt has been launched to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen weapon and funds.
