The Federal Government has announced the opening of condolence registers in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, following a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement released late Monday, 14 July, by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, the registers are to be made available to members of the diplomatic community and the general public at designated locations in Abuja and across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) nationwide.

According to the statement, “In honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, President Tinubu has also directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at the entrance of their respective offices for the public to pay their respects to the late elder statesman.

“Additionally, a central condolence register for the diplomatic community and the general public will be opened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja.”

The government also indicated that further briefings and updates related to mourning activities would be released in the coming days.

This gesture is part of a broader series of national mourning events following the passing of Buhari, who died in a London hospital on Sunday at the age of 82. As part of the observances, President Tinubu earlier directed that the Nigerian flag be flown at half-mast for seven days beginning Monday.

In addition, the federal government declared Tuesday, 15 July, a national public holiday to honour the memory of the former president, who served both as military Head of State (1983–1985) and civilian President (2015–2023).

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the world, with global leaders, African heads of state, and past Nigerian presidents extolling Buhari’s leadership, patriotism, and commitment to national development.
