The African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition has issued a warning to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, cautioning that any decision to dump the coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections could bring an abrupt end to his political journey.
The warning follows recent remarks by Yunusa Tanko, Director-General of the Obidient Movement, who stated on Monday that Mr Obi would contest the 2027 presidential election “with or without” the backing of the ADC coalition. Tanko also advised that the ADC should zone its presidential ticket to the South rather than the North.
Reacting swiftly, Comrade Abayomi Bello of the ADC Youth Vanguard said Tanko’s statement, if truly reflective of Obi’s position, raises serious concerns about the former Anambra State Governor’s political direction. Bello warned that quitting the coalition simply because of a failed presidential bid could damage Obi’s public image and expose him as a self-serving politician.
“If he walks away from the coalition because he fails to clinch the ticket, it would send the wrong message,” Bello stated. “It would portray Mr Obi as yet another self-interested politician more concerned with personal ambition than with the long-term vision of nation-building.”
Bello urged Mr Obi, who has a history of shifting party affiliations, to resist the temptation of political expediency and instead commit to building a lasting political legacy. He advised Obi to mentor emerging leaders and contribute to institutional political development, rather than abandon the coalition in pursuit of another platform.
The warning signals deepening tensions within the opposition ranks as the countdown to the 2027 elections gathers pace. Political observers say the coalition, which aims to unite credible opposition voices under one front, is facing its first real test of unity.
Peter Obi, known for his grassroots support and technocratic credentials, emerged as a formidable third force in the 2023 general election, finishing third behind the APC and PDP candidates. However, questions continue to swirl around his next political move and which platform he will adopt going forward.
