Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has urged communities in Borno and Yobe states to see themselves as key partners in the fight against terrorism, stressing that unity and public support are crucial to ending the insurgency.
Oluyede made the call after reviewing the Nigerian military’s operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP.
He said findings show that the success of military operations is directly linked to the level of cooperation from local communities. He warned that terrorism cannot thrive without support from some members of the public.
According to him, reports indicate that certain individuals are aiding or hiding terrorists, which is undermining military efforts and prolonging the suffering of residents.
He added that most perpetrators are not outsiders but people known within the community, including neighbors and even relatives.
The defence chief therefore urged residents to overcome fear and bias, expose criminals, and deny them safe haven.
Oluyede emphasized that the fight against terrorism is not solely the responsibility of the military but a collective duty, calling on citizens to provide timely and credible intelligence to security agencies.
He cited a recent attack in Kukawa, where injured terrorists were discovered within the community, suggesting possible collaboration.
The Chief of Defence Staff also assured that the military is adapting to evolving terrorist tactics, including the use of drones.
He further called on traditional rulers, clerics, youths, and civil society groups to intensify efforts in public awareness and countering extremist ideologies.
He urged citizens to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the Northeast.
