Widespread outrage has erupted in Ozoro, Delta State, following disturbing reports that several young women were sexually assaulted during what has been described as a so-called “raping festival” in the community.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts and viral videos, groups of men reportedly targeted girls seen outdoors on Thursday, March 19, forcefully attacking and molesting them. Some victims were allegedly raped, as chaos unfolded in parts of the town.
Unconfirmed reports claim the incident is linked to a controversial annual festival in March, during which women are allegedly expected to remain indoors, with those found outside subjected to harassment and assault by participants.
The situation has raised particular concern for students of Delta State University Ozoro, many of whom may have been unaware of the alleged dangers. There are also claims that visitors and non-indigenes in the community fell victim to the attacks.
Confirming police intervention, Bright Edafe, spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, disclosed that arrests have already been made. He added that the command is set to issue an official statement as investigations continue.
