Police in Kenya have arrested a man, Elvis Opiro, for allegedly orchestrating a brutal acid attack on his 24-year-old former girlfriend, Mary Claire.
According to preliminary investigations, Opiro is accused of hiring an accomplice to carry out the attack. The assailant reportedly ambushed the victim on her way home and doused her with a corrosive substance, leaving her with severe facial injuries.
Eyewitnesses said members of the public swiftly intervened, cornering the attacker as he attempted to flee. An angry mob reportedly descended on him before police officers arrived and rescued him from further harm.
Claire is currently battling for her life at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is receiving specialised treatment.
The case has also sparked outrage after it emerged that the victim had earlier reported the suspect in November over an alleged assault, but no action was taken at the time.
Confirming the arrest, former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, disclosed that authorities successfully apprehended the suspect after laying a trap.
The suspect is currently in custody at Kibera Police Station as investigations continue.
