AFCON Storm: CAF Under Fire as Guinea Seeks to Strip Morocco of 1976 Title

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is under mounting pressure after the Guinea Football Federation formally called for a review of Morocco’s 1976 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.

Guinea is contesting the legitimacy of the title, alleging that Morocco staged a walkout during the निर्णing phase of the tournament and should not have been allowed to retain the trophy. The federation is now pushing for the title to be reassigned in line with current disciplinary standards.

The demand follows CAF’s recent controversial ruling that stripped Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title after a brief player walkout in the final, with the trophy subsequently awarded to Morocco. Guinea argues that the same regulatory principles must be applied retroactively to ensure consistency and fairness in African football governance.

Historically, the 1976 AFCON—hosted in Ethiopia—was decided via a final group stage format rather than a single final match. Morocco clinched the title after a 1–1 draw against Guinea, finishing top of the standings.

Fueling the controversy, Raymond Hack, a former president of CAF’s Disciplinary Board, claimed that Morocco had indeed staged a walkout during the decisive fixture. He made the assertion during an interview with Robert Marawa, while reacting to CAF’s Appeals Board verdict on the 2025 AFCON case.

According to the ruling, Senegal breached Articles 82 and 84 of AFCON regulations after players temporarily left the pitch in protest of a refereeing decision—grounds that led to the forfeiture of the title.

Hack argued that the 1976 incident represents a historical precedent, raising critical questions about whether CAF can justifiably enforce modern disciplinary codes on past tournaments.
