Four young men, among whom was a teenage boy, have been arrested by the police in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, wÃth 42 bags of Cannabis Sitiva (Indian hemp).
The suspects, 19-year-old James Tina; Anayor Okechukwu, 25; John Chidi, 32 and Felix Tehemeh, 20, ran into the police ambush on Saturday, November 9, 2019 after harvesting the substance and about to distribute it to their customers.
According to reports, the suspects were said to have a large expanse of farmland within the forest, where they planted and harvested the prohibited substance on yearly basis until that fateful Saturday when the cat was led out of the bag through information.
The informant revealed to the operatives that the suspects had just harvested their illicit farm products and were about going to pass through the town with the weeds, apparently for distribution.
"Upon the information", the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said in a press release made available to Crime Puzzle that, "the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Kaseem Solotan, quickly mobilized his men and headed straight to the forest where the suspects were said to be coming from.
"The suspects were accosted on the road where four of them were apprehended with 42 bags containing weeds, suspected to be Indian hemp" the PPRO stated.
Oyeyemi further said that a preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects have a large expanse of land inside the forest where the cannabis is being planted on yearly basis, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Bashir Makama had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for discreet investigation, while also commending members of the public for their alertness and provision of necessary information that led to the arrest of the suspects.
Makama, the release added, further directed that a comprehensive investigation be carried out on how to locate the said farmland.
