The Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board has issued more than 2,000 filming permits to filmmakers and production companies within the last year, further cementing Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s undisputed film production capital.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, disclosed this on Wednesday during the ongoing annual Ministerial Press Briefing marking the seventh year anniversary of the administration of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

According to the Commissioner, the permits covered feature films, documentaries, short films and commercial productions shot across Lagos State, reflecting the growing confidence of filmmakers in the state’s creative ecosystem.

Benson-Awoyinka attributed the surge in film production activities to the rapid expansion of Lagos’ creative economy and the increasing attractiveness of the state to filmmakers across Africa.

In a major boost to youth empowerment in the creative sector, the Commissioner also revealed that over 10,000 young creatives have been trained through strategic partnerships involving the Del-York Creative Academy, Ebony Life Creative Academy, GIDI Creative Academy and the African Film Academy.

She explained that the training initiatives were designed to equip emerging talents with industry-standard skills capable of competing on the global stage.

The Commissioner further stated that the Lagos State Government remains committed to strengthening intellectual property protection and combating piracy, which Governor Sanwo-Olu recently identified as one of the biggest threats confronting Nollywood during the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

Further details revealed that the LSFVCB also partnered with several film festivals and creative organisations, including the Badagry International Film Festival, Lagos International Festival of Animation and Silverbird Film Distribution, as part of efforts to deepen the growth of the entertainment industry in the State.
