A senior lecturer at Kogi State University, identified as Dr Ibikunle, has died under controversial circumstances during an alleged sexual encounter with a 200-level student at a local hotel in Anyigba.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, 15th July 2025, and has sent shockwaves through the university community, with many students and staff expressing disbelief over the nature of the lecturer's death.
According to credible sources, the late lecturer, who was reputed for his strict academic standards and feared by many students, was allegedly notorious for demanding sexual favours from female students in exchange for grades.
Police confirmed that Dr Ibikunle, a married man and father, had checked into the hotel with a second-year student from the Department of Social Studies Education, identified as 22-year-old Gloria Samuel. The lecturer reportedly consumed multiple energy drinks before the encounter and collapsed during the act.
Kogi State Police Command spokesman, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters, stating that the case was initially reported by the hotel manager, one Moses Friday, who informed the Anyigba Police Division.
“According to the manager, the girl ran to the reception and said the lecturer had slumped after they had sex,” Aya said. “The DPO was immediately alerted and rushed to the scene. The man was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.”
SP Aya further revealed that the student has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation and possible prosecution. An autopsy has been conducted to determine the exact cause of death, although the result is yet to be made public.
University authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
