Edo Central Senatorial District has recorded an impressive 75 per cent compliance rate in the July edition of the monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise, particularly in Esan North East and Esan South East Local Government Areas.

The disclosure was made by the Edo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir (Dr) Lucky Eseigbe, during a field assessment conducted on Saturday, 26th July 2025.

Dr Eseigbe, who personally led a monitoring team across several locations, expressed satisfaction with the level of participation, describing it as a clear sign of growing environmental awareness and civic responsibility among residents.

“We are impressed with the level of awareness and participation,” he said. “But to maintain and improve on this progress, we must strengthen our enforcement and monitoring capacity. That’s why the Governor has approved the recruitment of additional Environmental Health Officers.”

He also praised security personnel and sanitation enforcement teams for ensuring order and compliance during the exercise.

The Commissioner called on Local Government Chairmen to intensify grassroots sensitisation using diverse communication platforms to drive wider community participation. He stressed the importance of rural engagement to achieve sustainable environmental hygiene across the State.

In further support of the State Government’s sanitation drive, Hon Kelvin Iyere, Chairman of Esan Central LGA and current ALGON Chairman, announced the creation of a dedicated Environmental Task Force Team. The team will monitor and enforce sanitation laws, while weekly waste evacuation has been introduced as part of efforts to prevent flooding and improve community health.

Similarly, the Chairmen of Esan South East and Esan North East LGAs, Hon Edoh Moses and Hon Paul Akhere Uhomesili respectively, outlined additional strategies being implemented to complement the State’s sanitation programme. These include the deployment of payloaders for waste removal, extensive public enlightenment campaigns, and the establishment of a mobile court to promptly prosecute sanitation offenders.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, with many commending the State Government’s firm stance on environmental cleanliness. Mr Christopher Calistus, a Uromi native, expressed his appreciation: “I’m very satisfied with what I’ve seen. The government’s commitment is commendable. I encourage them to sustain this momentum, and I pray for continued success for the Okpebholo-led administration.”

The State’s sanitation efforts continue to gain traction as community leaders and residents rally behind the vision of a cleaner, safer, and more environmentally conscious Edo.
