Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 19 Edo governorship elections, on Sunday night asked many unanswered questions of his People’s Democratic Candidate (PDP) counterpart, Mr Godwin Obaseki.
This was at the governorship debate organised by Channels Television in Benin City, Edo State where Pastor Ize-Iyamu, a lawyer, pastor, farmer and politician reaffirmed his belief that with the right leadership the state would get better.
On the state’s workforce, the APC candidate noted that Edo civil service is not over-bloated and that his PDP counterpart was trying to reduce the workforce to the barest minimum, adding that he went around the schools in the state during his campaign, observing that the schools have no teachers and the hospitals have no doctors.
He disclosed that in Uromi, the people lamented that they had just one doctor. In addition, he expressed regret that the government falsified reports by stating that they had provided up to 157,000 jobs in Edo state in four years. Governor Obaseki, he advised, should not mistake the recent appointments he made whereby 2000 persons were appointed as SSA on social media.
Meanwhile, he explained that his campaign manifesto, the SIMPLE agenda, is a road map for the development the state urgently needs, adding that he would engage members of Edo state and keep our resources circulating within our state and not employing outsiders with state resources, that is capital flight.
He said, “I have a simple agenda, I am proud of it and I talk about it everywhere I go; It's a working document. From the beginning to the end is jobs, jobs, jobs for Edo people. If Edo state government had been able to provide jobs, the Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) should have increased.
In a state where 8 out of every 10 graduates don't have jobs, if he had created over a hundred thousand jobs, it would reflect on the statistics. I believe we must abolish multiple taxation in the state. For a government claiming to have driven away agberos, I can mention names of people not under the employment of the Edo state government who collect taxes on behalf of the government.”
I want to make it clear that the civil service workforce is NOT overbloated. The problem is that the governor has not lifted a finger to develop the workforce; it will be suicidal to try him again. My SIMPLE agenda will properly utilise the Civil service#EdoGovernorshipDebate
