Conjoined twins successfully separated in Abuja

A conjoined set of twins have been successfully separated in a 12-hour surgery involving 78 medical personnel, at the National Hospital in Abuja.

The twins were delivered at the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, Nasarawa State before they were referred to the National Hospital.

Speaking with our correspondent, Francis Onoja on Wednesday, the Head of Department, Information and Protocol management, Tayo Haastrup disclosed that the National Hospital decided to carry out the surgery free of charge as part of its corporate social responsibility adding that the conjoined twins were monitored for 16 months before the separation was done.

Mr Tayo also called on Nigerians to have faith in the health sector as some delicate carried out abroad with huge sums of money can be done in the country cheaply.

Mr Tayo also disclosed that the ministry of women affairs has offered the mother of the separated twins a job in the ministry. 

Meanwhile, the National Hospital in Abuja has been commended for the first ever separation of a set of conjoined twins.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, who made the commendation during his official visit to the hospital, described the medical feat, as a remarkable one.

The minister urged the hospital’s management and the team of surgeons to sustain their excellent teamwork, saying it would boost confidence of Nigerians in the nation’s health care delivery.

On his part, Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Dr Jaf Momoh, who said the feat was achieved through teamwork, also harped on the need for more budgetary allocation for the health sector to avoid medical tourism.
