The Hassan and Hussein Lecky foundation on Saturday organised an empowerment programme for some widows in Auchi, Etsako West local council.
About 50 windows benefited from the programme with a cash gift of #250, 000 to be distributed among them for start ups.
The Sole Administrator of the foundation, Mr. Hussein Mustapha Lecky in his address said that the Foundation is for the community and to assist the less privileges especially the widows, the sick and children.
Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Victor Aigbefo added that the Foundation has total commitment for the welfare of widows in Auchi and environs with a bid to pull them out of debilitating poverty.
He said: "We are individually and collectively concerned about the welfare of widows in our Society. More importantly, we are ready to pull resources together to empower the widows in our community with a bid to pulling them out of debilitating poverty."
According to him, there are around 15million widows in Nigeria, a significant percentage of them in serious poverty and neglect. For most, their late husband's were the sole bread-winner in the family and the demise of the husband has made their wives quite vulnerable to poverty and want. Couple withlack of life insurance and profitable investment, a family without its breadwinner is soon pushed into poverty. He furthered.
He urged the federal government to institute a comprehensive and dependable social welfare system for the less privilege especially the widows while urging well meaning Nigerians to support the foundation to creat a sustainable system that care for people with little or no resources of their own.
On their part, the beneficiaries of the programme expressed their appreciation for the Foundation's support
